English Prepositions Usage

Prepositions are not only used to show time, place, and agent but are also used in combination with verbs, adjectives, nouns, and in many common set expressions. All prepositions cannot be listed here so we will present only the important groups:

Verb + preposition depend on, lead on, account for, believe in, belong to, confined to, contribute to, detach from, fight for, insist on, lead to, abtain from, overcome by, withdraw from
Adjectuve/Participle + preposition accustomed to, afraid of, based on, compared to, different from, expert at, free from, famous for, necessary for, opposed to, possible for, related to, responsible for, successful in, surprised at, typical of
Noun + preposition cause of, cost of, danger of, effect on, equivalent of, evidence of, example of, increase in, influence on, need for, possibilty of, reason for, result of, use of, solution to, supply of
Other combination with preposition according to, as a consequence of, as a result of, because of, by means of, in addition to, in spite of, in terms of, in the process of, in view of, on account of, on behalf of, on the basis of, prior to, with the exception of, with the purpose of

decade ( in the 1980s)
century ( in the nineteenth century)
on days of the week ( on Monday)
dates ( on March 20 )
for/since duration of time ( for 3 weeks )
point of times (since March 20 )
from .....to beginning time ......ending from ( from 8 am to 6 p.m )

at address ( at 176 Vine street )
on street/road/avenue ( on Kings Road )
floor ( on the third floor )
in building ( in the drugstore )
city ( in Bangkok )
state ( in Utamah )
country ( in Thailand )
continent ( in Asia )
from......to beginning point ..... ending point ( from Kuala Lumpur to Johor)

Since the use of prepositions and their rules can be very confusing for many learners of English, it is best to learn as many prepositions as possible in combination with other words. Error on the exam may include the wrong preposition being used or a preposition being omitted where it should not be.
