Using final S/ES in English

This free English grammar lesson is about using -S or -ES in English. Using -S or -ES whether it is a plural noun or a simple present verb tense when the subject is a singular nour or a singular third person pronoun is quite confusing to ESL learners.

Plural Noun:

Adding -S or -ES to a noun to make it plural.
Examples:

  • These books are good to read.
  • I go to English classes three times a week.

Verbs

Adding -S or -ES to the simple present VERB tense when its Subject  is a singular noun or a third person singular pronoun.
Examples:

  • She wants to be a good doctor.
  • Bob works very hard.
  • He teaches us English at university.

Spelling for final -S or – ES

  1. The most common way for most words, a noun or a verb, we simply add -S to it to spell the word correctly.
    Examples:

    • like – likes
    • book – books
  2. Word or verb that end with -s, -sh, -ch, -z, -x is added -ES to spell it correctly.
    • bus – buses
    • wash – washes
    • watch – watches
    • buzz – buzzes
    • box – boxes
  3. Word ends in -y:
    • Add -S only if -y is followed by a vowel.
      Examples:
      boy – boys
      stay – stays
    • Change -y into -I and add -ES if -y is followed by a consonant.
      Examples:
      baby – babies
      study – studies
