Improve Your English Listening Skill
English Listening is the most difficult for ESL learners. It takes them a lot of time to practise and effort so that they can be good at it in communicating. In this page, I would like to share with you some tips which bring you better results of listening improvement.
Beginner’s English Listening tips
People who are first time learning English face a big problem with this skill. And they find that it is not easy to improve.
As an ESL teacher, I see there are some good ways to help English learners to practice the listening skill.
1. Just Listen: Listen to whatever tapes, CDs you have. Just listen as often as you can. At this stage, learners do not need to understand what is said in the tapes or CD, but listen to train their ears to get used to with English sounds.
2. Listen to Words: Find the English listening materials which are for low level. First, read the script and learn the vocabulary of the lesson you are going to practice your listening skill. Second, read and listen what is in the script. Try to get how the words are said / pronounced. Then, don’t read any more, but just listen and see if you can get what the words in the script. Next, Listen to short sentences and repeat the sentences you hear. Do this for 1 – 3 weeks, you will see your listening skill really much improves.
English Listening tips for low / pre-intermediate and above
When we listen to some kinds of information, of course, we must know the vocabulary in order to understand the listening passage. Therefore, always learn the vocabulary words before you start listening practice.
It is also important to fully understand the information of the listening, we should know the grammar structures used in the listening. While reading through the listening script for vocabulary, also check if there is any grammar point that you don’t know and study it. This also helps us better to improve the listening smoother and faster.
